Ya Koo (1985)

Director: Franco Rubartelli
Stars: Jose Gregorio Payema, Arantza Fuentes, Emilio Fuentes, Flor Núñez

Pepiwe (played by Jose Gregorio Payema) is a Yanomami boy living in a Catholic mission. After getting into an argument with his teacher about the name of his river (she says Rio Siapa; he calls it Periquitos), Pepiwe decides to return to the jungle to look for his family. He paddles down the Orinoco with his dog and parrot, and during a stopover on land he meets yet another nun (Flor Núñez), but not one from his mission. She pays the boy to show him the way to San Carlos de Rio Negro (by the Colombian border). He reluctantly agrees, but after a day's journey the nun tries to sneak away and loses the canoe. Ya-Koo has elements of a road movie with comically mismatched traveling companions, and the two leads have great chemistry, but it is much more than that. When we see Pepiwe in his own element, wise in his own jungle, feeding and caring for both himself and the lost nun in the beautiful and deadly rain forest, we feel that an entire culture and way of life is being celebrated. And also, perhaps, mourned. Ya-Koo is the Tupi word for good-bye.

This is a sequel to the brilliant first film, set in the shadow of the Tokyo Tower. Its now 1959, four months later, and we're still with the same characters. You still have the over the top Suzuki-San, you have Chagawa, who still pines for Hiromi, continues to struggle as a writer and still faces uncertainty as to keeping Junnosuke with him. In this film, the pretty Roku gets a boyfriend, and the Suzuki family takes in a young girl who is a cousin. She is at first very tentative but soon becomes part of the family. Like in the first film, things happen which make you laugh and cry.

Always san-chôme no yûhi (2005)

Always san-chôme no yûhi / Always - Sunset on The Third Street

Director: Takashi Yamazaki
Stars: Maki Horikita, Hidetaka Yoshioka, Shin'ichi Tsutsumi, Koyuki, Hiroko Yakushimaru, Kazuki Koshimizu, Kenta Suga, Masaya Takahashi, Kaga Mochimaru, Tomokazu Miura

Based on the long-seller manga by Ryohei Saigan, "Always" inspires Japanese people's nostalgy to its good ol' 50's, with a huge VFX effort to reproduce the era, including the half-built Tokyo Tower. The story is rather simple - everyday life of the good town's people, their dreams, hopes, love and tears, but the film was a big hit and highly acclaimed due to its great balance of its powerful cast, well told story and the nostalgic cinematography.
