In the summer of 1939, 13-year-old Marie goes with her parents to visit her grandmother in a small town near Avignon. His search for the boy leads him to a community of homeless men living under a heavily trafficked bridge. His contact with these wretched but spiritually honest outcasts fulfills him in a way that religious life cannot.
