Adaptation of Herman Melville's novel Israel Potter: His Fifty Years of Exile (1854). Israel Potter, a "sailor from nowhere", engages out of loving spite in the American War of Independence. At the first scuffle, he fell into the hands of the English who boarded him on a prison boat. It is the beginning of a series of adventures which will lead him from England to France, from prisons to escapes, to meet famous characters.
