All Day on the Sands, directed by Giles Foster, is about a family holiday in a comically pretentious guest-house in Morecombe, during which a small boy's attempts to stave off boredom unwittingly bring down humiliation on his parents (Alun Armstrong and Marjorie Yates). The boy's incomprehension of anything but the fact that he's done wrong will be familiar to anybody who's been a child: a reminder that the equation comedy = tragedy + time doesn't always add up.
