Cast away as a child, Christina finds shelter in a convent, where for reasons vital to the plotline she decides to pose as a male. Put to work as a stable boy, Christina grows into adulthood without ever revealing her true gender. Appointed aide-de-camp to one Major Merian, Christina falls in love with her superior officer, though of course she can't express her ardor without raising all sorts of trouble.
