This is a high quality TV film in two episodes and one of the best and most important in Icelandic film history. It is based on the novel Brekkukotsannáll (Annals of Brekkukot) by the Nobel Prize Winner in Literature Halldór Laxness, published in 1957. The story takes place in Iceland in the beginning of the twentieth century and deals with the orphaned boy Álfgrímur, his adoptive grandparents, and the small, tolerant community of misfits and eccentrics they gather around them at Brekkukot, their cottage on the outskirts of Reykjavík.
